I know lots of musicians and am friends with many of them. Because of my own background as a harmonica player, most of them also play this instrument.

I have been observing how musicians cope with the new realities in the music business for a long time (www.techdirt.com is a great blog for copy right and business model discussion) and would like to share one example of smart promotion that I came across today.

Brendan Power, an unconventional harmonica player from New Zealand living in England has posted a video of the solos he played in the album "Back to back", recorded with another extraordinary harmonica player, PT Gazell, from Nashville. It is a 5 minute clip with splashes of the songs. In the background, the cover of the CD, it is about the music.

Brendan is giving his music (and PT's) away in a way that makes his fans happy and doesn't hurt anybody. Hopefully, people will hear the best parts of the album, like it and feel encouraged to buy it. And Brendan gives them two ways to do that: either through his website or through PT's. As the people at Techdirt say: give fans a reason to buy and they will do so.

And probably Brendan can do this because this is an independent CD, not linked to restrictive big label contracts.

Tonight it was the night of Titus, a multi-instrumentalist from Munich. He played different guitars, lap steel, ukulele (as seen on the video), banjo, Stroh violin and accompanied himself on bass pedals and a foot snare. Curiosly enough, he has a Swan bass harmonica on a rack built especially for it. I played a song with him and a singer/guitar player called Benjamin in an impromptu jam while Titus was playing the lap steel, bass pedals and bass harmonica on the rack. Very cool.

Every year there is a day where I look out the window and am surprised by a tree with yellow leaves which reminds me that fall has arrived. It was the case 2 weeks ago.
This video I took on the way from Köln to Mainz, on the train. It is a very, very beautiful way. I hope the video works.

It was fun!

Just delivered the last assignment for the GIM class 30 minutes ago.
That means that, apart from the Global Supply Chain Management assignment due on Monday, I am done with MBA classes.
I wish I could continue to have classes indefinetely. I like classes. I like to learn, to ask, to discuss. And I like the feeling of beeing worry-free, as the only thing you are supposed to do is pay attention.
ButI need to find a job and to write a thesis. So it is good to be finally able to concentrate on that from now on.
Pity that this last module was, in my humble opinion, way below the level of other modules, so it wasn't very enjoyable. And I was (am) sick.
They are having a reception with champagne and snacks in the next room, I should join them. But I think that my health won't allow me to drink or eat much. That also the reason I am missing out on the Hazmat Modine concert in Stuttgart in an hour. But I should be fine tomorrow.

This is the first time I have ever seen a real fox (we don't have them in Brazil, you know? Just lobos guarás...) from this close, so I had to document it, even if the pictures got blurry.
I guess that it must like the park, with the dozens of bunnies living there...

Last time I saw Henrique, my nephew, he was a new born baby who had just undergone heart surgery. Now, after another surgery in January, he is really fine, as you all can surely see.

Yes, I really hope I can make it to Brazil after the MBA.
BTW, I was listening to all this through skype, while my sister was filming. I felt strangely close. Technology helps a lot.

I found Johnny Lee's videos through a BusinessWeek article and they just blew my mind. I have been aware of Wii modifications for some time now, especially for music interface purposes, but what he has done is not only extremely professional and relevant, it is also explained in a great way. His haptic pen, even though it does not use the Wii remote, is a very cool device too:

I really miss my Hagenuk S200 Palm OS Smartphone. It died on me, or, more probable, the battery did. But it could run Java applications, the best being Google Maps for mobile phones.
The only thing missing was a feature telling you where you are. My phone didn't have a GPS module, but Google Maps helped me a lot in several occasions in Germany, where I had GPRS internet access very cheaply (www.symio.de, I can recommend this pay as you go SIM cards).
Well, now I won't need a GPS module anymore, it seems. Google is using the cell tower location to approximately tell you where you are. It is by far not as precise as GPS, but I imagine that it is a really big improvement over the older version of Maps.
But it is revision week, an assignment is to be delivered on Monday and others have already written about this. So check the fun genial video below and the following article.

Just one more quick note: it seems that the best precision of Google Maps Mobile My Location feature is about 600 m or half a block.

If I could go back in time...

I usually don't drink coffee during the coffee breaks. But am happy to attack the fruit basket and drink water.

Well, I was on my way on Exhibition Road to the Imperial College's library, looked left and saw a familiar face. It was the yound and already very successful chromatic harmonica player Philip Achile. I had met him briefly during the World Harmonica Festival 2005, where he ended up being champion.
Philip had a saxophone case with him. It turns out that he is studying sax at the Imperial College, but wants to try playing harmonica there too. Well, he has made it to the Royal Albert Hall already, I guess that says a lot!

Well, a first note on travelling to London. Those cheap flight to Stanstead are really temping. But take into consideration that you will spend at least an extra 25 pounds (almost €40,00) to get to Central London, between the train, the tube and change comission. The best bet is London City airport.

The day after, taking a bus trip from Hammersmith Hospital to Piccadilly Circus. Why Piccadilly? Because. It was as good a destination as any other. I chose the bus over the tube so that I could see the sights too, sitting in the top front left spot. This inverted traffic system is really scary.


Then a stop at Apple's store on Regent Street. I liked the stairs a lot. Made of glas. It is interesting, though, to watch how things work there. It has characteristics of a church, school, social center. You really don't go there just to buy things. You can spend hours testing everything, learning from the instructors, watching product presentations and workshops.

Good thing I am not a Mac fan, or I would have come out of the shop a lot poorer. But the new iPod Nano is nice. And I have friends who enjoy this, so I put the photos online.

And later I was walking towards Piccadilly Circus I heard the distinctive sound of live music. And, sure enough, great funk music with tight horn lines was flowing out of a big fancy shop. I got in, spent some minutes, drank a nice glass of berry juice, shot this short video and continued on my way.

Meu carismático primo bem que lembrou de outra faceta importante da facilidade de se colocar vídeos no Youtube. Na verdade, vou comentar sobre mais dois usos.
Um é o simples uso do Youtube como um registro fácil e tosco de eventos. Como mostram os vídeos abaixo. Afinal, foto de show não é tão interessante, né?



O outro uso do Youtube é como um depósito de vídeos-demo. Como nesse que eu não sei se é bem um demo, mas vai servir de exemplo. É a banda Bunker 292 com quem toquei por uns meses na sua versão acústica antes de ir à China. Meus primos continuam tocando por lá. Adoraria tocar na versão punk mesmo, tacando uns efeitos doidos na gaita.

Eu testei e fiquei bobo de ver. Só falta ver como que isso será utilizado. Mas que é legal, é. Muito legal.
Na verdade, é tão legal que eu gostaria de ter isso no meu computador para mexer nas minhas fotos. Não pelo fato de eu poder montar paisagens diferentes, mas pelo fato de poder navegar por imagens de maneira muito rápida e bastante legal.

Bem, como vocês perceberam, eu fui ao show do Aerosmith. E adorei me gabar a semana inteira por isso. Agora só mais um videozinho e um pequeno relato, e chega de frescura.



A Hohner vem há um tempo conversando com o Steven Tyler. Ele quer vender gaitas nos shows dele, e compra da gente. Aí o Aerosmith esteve na Alemanha para um turnê, logo depois do Brasil, onde meu irmão foi ao show no Morumbi. Pena que o Fábio não estava aqui, sobrou um ingresso.
O Steven queria na verdade visitar a fábrica, mas não deu certo. Mas convidou a gente pro show. Então fomos nós a Karlsruhe (ta calhando de eu ir bastante para lá nesses últimos meses) ver o show, com entrada VIP e uma sessão de alô marcada com o Steven. Presentes os gerentes de guitarras e gaitas, o diretor comercial e eu.
Bem, o cara ou tem um humor muito bom, ou tava de humor muito bom. Chegou fazendo piada, comentando sobre gaitas e tal. Ganhou de nós uma gaita comemorativa de 150 anos com corpo de vidro que ele adorou e saímos ao pátio para tirar fotos.
A história das fotos é a seguinte: nós não pudemos tirar fotos. Mas a fotógrafa oficial estava lá e tirou um montão, posadas, normais, em grupo, etc. O Steven iria dar uma olhada nas fotos e liberar algumas para nós, que seriam enviadas mais tarde.
Além da gaita comemorativa, eu levei uma Special 20 afinada em C menor (natural). Eu acho que muitos gaitistas nunca tiveram uma gaita dessas na mão, elas são muito legais e gostosas de tocar, então tento fazer um pouco de propaganda. E realmente, o cara curtiu, e pediu que eu tocasse junto com ele. Bem, ele tocando base em G menor (ele toca razoavelmente bem, não precisa se esconder em jam nenhuma), e eu com uma gaita em G em primeira posição na terceira oitava, tentando não dar muita nota fora. Acho que o melhor teria sido a gaita em F low em terceira posição, mas nessas coisas a gente não pensa na hora. De qualquer forma, foi divertido. E agora tou esperando as fotos, acho que ficaram legais :-))
Depois dos autógrafos obrigatórios teve o show do Aerosmith. 6000 pessoas no ginásio, eles estavam esperando 10000. Sei lá porque veio tão pouca gente, mas foi legal assim. Eu tive a impressão que o show do Bryan Adams tava bem mais cheio.
A banda de abertura foi bastante chata, nada de mais. O show em si foi legal, os caras tocam muito e fazem um show muito, muito bom. Foi legal tentar cantar algumas das músicas conhecidas (sempre fui péssimo para letra de música) e me misturar na galera.
Mas o som estava ruim. Infelizmente. Nada de médios, poucos agudos, baixo na estratosfera. E o povo da firma resolveu voltar antes do término do show, tudo bem.
Voltamos a Trossingen a 180 - 190 km/h. Um dos efeitos do show, eu acredito.

Mas na ida recebi uma notícia triste. Estava no carro com o Steve, checando os e-mails antes de sair da Alemanha. Marisa Lobo morreu em conseqüência de uma queda acidental no centro de Sampa.



Eu conheci a Marisa rapidamente em janeiro de 2006, quando estive em São Paulo. Linda, carismática, sexy, inteligente, interessante e independente. Não são muitas pessoas que deixam uma impressão tão forte em tão pouco tempo. Era atriz e bióloga, mas outros que a conheceram melhor poderão falar mais sobre ela.

Na verdade eu tinha pensado de colocar um dos vídeos do show de hoje. O show foi legal, a banda é amadora, e nem se compara com a banda de ontem. Apareceram literalmente apenas meia dúzia de visitantes, de modo que a banda mais um grupo de estudantes que tinha que filmar o show como tarefa da faculdade estavam em maior número que nós, a platéia.
Por outro lado, me diverti muito mais hoje do que ontem. Acabei até encontrando o povo do Broken Seat, a banda com a qual ensaiei 3 vezes ano passado, legal. E no final das contas, acabei dando uma canja espontânea, espontâneamente em 3a. posição, fato que só fui perceber no final da música, quando vi o tom da música. Na minha opinião, uma das melhores participações que já dei. Pena que eu não filmei. Talvez o povo da faculdade sim.
Mas o título disso aqui é Ukulélé funky. E eu quero postar aqui um dos quatro vídeos de um francês.





Nos outros vídeos ele toca um Ukulele Solid da Risa, que eu acho que vou comprar, pois curti muito o conceito. Além disso, toca um James Brown bem decente na gaita, vale a pena dar uma olhada.
